16 Sep (Tue):Hamilton, MT. Mid-1960s on nearby Trapper Peak. I operated a chainsaw on a 30-man USFS Hotshot Fire Crew. Huge blaze, wind switched, no escape route, stranded on a high ridge. Radioed for helicopter rescue, no can do, too much smoke, wind too severe. Stashed our equipment incl two chain saws, parts, oil, gasoline. Dug trenches, into foil body bags. A crew mate told Nancy he peeked out, saw me standing, smoking a cigarette as the approaching fire wall roared. We 30 survived. Youth invincibility. |
